Kochi and Vizhinjam: Emerging Maritime Gateways of India

Kerala’s strategic position along India’s southwest coast places it close to some of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. At the centre of this growing maritime landscape are Kochi and Vizhinjam, two ports with distinct strengths that are enhancing Kerala’s connectivity with global markets.

Kochi: An Established Maritime Hub

Cochin Port has long served as an important gateway for cargo moving between India and international markets. Its location is particularly significant: the port is around 11 nautical miles from the Gulf–Singapore/Far East route, giving it close access to major east–west shipping corridors. Cochin Port Trust

With container, liquid bulk, LNG, general cargo and other facilities, Kochi supports a broad maritime and logistics ecosystem. During FY 2025–26, Cochin Port handled a record 38.06 million metric tonnes of cargo, reflecting its continuing importance to regional and international trade. Cochin Port Trust

Its connectivity to Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and wider Indian markets also strengthens opportunities for shipping, freight forwarding, marine logistics, bunkering and port-related services in Kochi. Cochin Port Trust

Vizhinjam: A New Global Transshipment Gateway

Further south, Vizhinjam International Seaport is adding a new dimension to Kerala’s maritime sector.

Located approximately 10 nautical miles from the international east–west shipping route, Vizhinjam benefits from deep natural waters and minimal vessel deviation from major global shipping lanes. Kerala Government

Commercial operations began on 3 December 2024, with the port primarily developed for container transshipment and gateway cargo. Its deep-water infrastructure enables it to accommodate large container vessels and strengthens India’s ability to handle more transshipment cargo domestically. Kerala Government

Strengthening Kerala's Maritime Ecosystem

Kochi and Vizhinjam serve different but complementary roles. Kochi provides an established and diversified port ecosystem, while Vizhinjam brings significant deep-water container transshipment capability.

Together, they can strengthen opportunities across:

  • International shipping and container trade
  • Shipbroking and chartering
  • Marine logistics and freight forwarding
  • Project and breakbulk cargo
  • Vessel and port service coordination
  • Bunkering and supporting maritime services

As trade links between India, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia continue to evolve, Kerala's maritime sector is positioned to play an increasingly important role in connecting regional businesses with international shipping networks.

For maritime companies, cargo interests, shipowners and logistics providers, Kochi and Vizhinjam represent two important gateways connecting Kerala with global trade.
